Every woman’s experience is unique
After an abortion, many women share that they feel an immediate sense of relief.  They anticipate being able to put the experience behind them, move forward with their lives, and have things return to normal.  While not everyone experiences problems following an abortion, some women struggle with lingering negative emotions, such as sadness, anger, or regret.  Women often have a hard time knowing how to process or don’t feel they have the right to grieve their loss, since they chose to terminate their pregnancy.

For women that initially felt relief, problems related to their abortion can unexpectedly emerge months, years, or even decades later.  Relief is replaced by recurring nightmares, flashbacks to the abortion experience, or symptoms consistent with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).  Some women struggle with clinical depression or anxiety.  Some may abuse drugs or alcohol as a way to cope.  Others battle eating disorders or suicidal thoughts or tendencies.
